After it was discovered in March 1906 that "MAINE" was the wrong size,
it appears that about 50 pairs (probably #801 - 850) were kept on hand
to issue, while the rest of the incorrect original Type 3 order,
probably #851 - 999, was sent back to the factory to refire the state
name as Type 4, just in time to be issued by at least May 14, 1906.

1934-35
During the Depression, Maine was left with thousands of unsold 1932 plates,
so during 1933, plans were made to design smaller plates to cut costs.
The law specified 4" tall numbers but did not mention alphabetic letters;
through this loophole, officials decided to try an alpha system similar
to that in use in Connecticut since 1932, using smaller stackable letters.
This system began with the 1934 plates, as the 1933 series had already been
ordered and manufactured. The letter system ended due to the requirement
for "Vacationland" on plates. Also, the law was changed regarding number
height (Ch. 162 P 4/6/1935 to 3 inches).
