Maine began automobile registration and state-issued plates in 1905.  The 1905-11, 1912 and 1913 plates were undated but in different colors.  The longest-running slogan in U.S. history is Maine's "VACATIONLAND", in continuous use since 1936.  Maine issued brass plates in 1947-48.  A bright red lobster was featured on plates issued in 1987-99.  The current issue of plates started in 1999.
