the 1,500 convertible plates.  These will be used for cars that
operate both for trucking and passenger purposes.  These are
common in the country.  Such cars have a removable seat in the
rear which is taken off and replaced by a box for delivery
service on week days, then the seat is replaced on Sunday and it
becomes a passenger car for the day.  Police have been puzzled by
these cars, and it was recognized that a distinguishing plate was
needed on the same system adopted in Ontario."

twenty-five dollars paid by the dealers for their licenses only
allows one member of the firm to drive the cars under the
dealers' license without payment of any further sum.  Salesmen
and other employees of firms must now all have a separate license
and pay $5 for the same.  This means in other words that the
government gets an extra $20 from the issue of the dealers' five
license numbers, as under the old arrangement salesmen were
allowed to operate without further license than that covered by
the number plates issued to the dealers."

SNOW VEHICLE
Began 1936.  Earliest seen 1938.

Winnipeg Free Press, 12/14/1935:
     "First Snowmobile License is Issued"
"Snowmobiles will come into their own in 1936 as motor
vehicular contraptions worthy of the dignity of special license
plates.  It was so decreed by the legislature last spring when
new highway traffic laws were enacted.
At the motor vehicle tax office at the legislative
buildings they have 100 snowmobile license plates ready to issue.
They rather didn't expect any more applications than that.  The
first to be issued went out Friday to Walter G. Smith, of
Dauphin.
Snowmobiles are not often seen around Greater Winnipeg, but
they are becoming frequent in the rurals areas, where the
combination of skis, caterpillar tractor and motor car body, with
airplane propeller on behind, has produced a means of transport
never seen before on land or sea.  Most are of the home-grown
variety."
