HAWAII

It is uncertain when motorcycles specifically began to be registered.  The territorial law of 1911 which provided for the registration of automobiles in 1912 included all "power-driven" vehicles, so motorcycles would also have been tagged as of 1912.  The oldest known territorial motorcycle disc is 1915.  The earliest definitive reference to motorcycles is in a Honolulu County ordinance effective for 1915, in which motorcycle is one of four new categories of county-issued plates being introduced.  An undated 1915 plate #A335 is known.  In Hawaii County, a 1918 motorcycle plate #20 is the earliest known.  For all known county motorcycle issues, please refer to the Hawaii Pre-state Local page.

Territorial motorcycle plates began in 1922 at the same time as passenger plates.  Honolulu ordered 350 "flat enameled" plates for 1922.  1926 is the earliest known Hawaii motorcycle plate.
