BOAT
Began 1949.  LEGENDS:  "M" 1949-57, "BOAT" 1958-72.

A. Ch. 203 P 3/14/1949, requiring all boats with inboard motors
to be licensed with plates.  Plates were only issued in
counties with navigable waterways.  Since the majority of
privately-owned boats had outboard motors, which were taxed as
personal property by county assessors, very few boat plates
were issued in 1949-56.  Design identical to motorcycle plates
but with different colors, in this case the "M" standing for
"Motorboat".  The 1949 tab number matched the plate number.

B. Ch. 199 P 3/13/1957, expanding boat registration to all
motorboats, including those with outboard motors and even
sailboats, resulting in a huge increase in plates issued, now
in all 44 counties.  Passenger colors 1958-68.
   Discontinued 1973; replaced by stickers.
