Idaho automobile registration and state-issued plates began in 1913. The 1928 issue featured the license number inside a giant potato, surrounded by "eyes"; this is also the first U.S. slogan plate. After a Statehood plate in 1940 and a Sun Valley ski jumper design in 1947, the potato finally reappeared in 1948, this time baked, complete with a melting pat of butter on top! The current issue of plates started in 1997.
