As of 1959, law authorized the appointment of 1 Colonel and up
to 20 Lt. Colonels. Under Gov. Patterson (1959-63), the number
surged to over 2,000, and under Gov. Wallace (1963-67) it
reached over 11,000. The slogan probably began in 1964, being
Wallace's campaign slogan. Lurleen Wallace died in office
5/7/1968. Last seen 1975/79.

"Each colonel is given a certificate and an automobile license
plate. The latter is updated each year to correspond with the
