Alabama began automobile registration and state-issued plates in October 1911, with the first plates expiring on September 30, 1912.  The first five years of plates were undated, in different colors each year, and are referred to as 1912 through 1916 plates.  The "HEART OF DIXIE" slogan and graphic began in 1955.  The current issue of plates started in 2014.
