Automobile registration began in 1912 in Arizona, just three months after statehood, and state-issued plates began in 1914. The 1917 steer head graphic is noteworthy as an early example of industry promotion. Real copper was used for the 1932-34 plates! The "GRAND CANYON STATE" slogan has been in continuous use since 1940 except for a brief hiatus in 1945-46. The earliest of the two currently valid base plates began issue in 1980.
