UTAH

Motorcycles were specifically excluded from the state's first automobile registration law in 1909.  By 1910 and 1911, some cities passed ordinances requiring motorcycle plates, and these remained in effect until mid-1915, when a new state law added motorcycles to the motor vehicles being registered by the state.

City motorcycle plates were provided for in an Ogden ordinance in 1911, but none are known to exist.  An undated white-on-blue porcelain motorcycle plate #851 is known from Provo.  Salt Lake City passed an ordinance in 1910 requiring city-issued motorcycle plates.  A 1910 has been reported, and two 1912 embossed metal plates are known, #310 and 328.  See the Utah Pre-state Local page for more details about Utah city motorcycle plates.

State-issued motorcycle plates began in 1915 at the same time as passenger plates, on May 11, 1915.  Issued in pairs, 1,183 motorcycles were registered in 1915.  The highest 1915 motorcycle plate known is #266.  A period photo shows a 1915 motorcycle plate #711 mounted on a Harley.
