GENERAL ASSEMBLY TRUCK

Indianapolis News, February 28, 1959: "Bully for Buxton"
"State Representative Leland Buxton (D., Blocher) displays the
special General Assembly license plate made for his pickup truck...
Buxton told the House he'd been refused a General Assembly plate
because he didn't have a car. He said he was a humble man and had
only a pickup truck. Democratic Speaker Birch Bayh made a special
case of Buxton's predicament and got him a plate with the truck's
gross weight imprinted at the bottom."
The Tribune (Seymour), March 9, 1960:
"Buxton Issued Special Assembly Truck Plate"
"Leland C. Buxton, of Blocher, a member of the Indiana House of
Representatives who is a candidate for state senator...in the
primary election to be held May 3, Tuesday obtained his 1960
special General Assembly license plate for his truck. The plate
is the only General Assembly truck plate issued in the state and
he said it was obtained for him this year through the cooperation
of the Indiana attorney general. Last year, special action by
the state legislature was taken in order for Buxton to be issued
the plate. He maintained he was entitled to it since he only had
a truck and the other legislators were issued special General
Assembly license plates for their automobiles. Buxton...was
exhibiting his new truck plate, General Assembly No. 92, which he
said was made especially for him at the Indiana state prison at
Michigan City."
Mr. Buxton lost the Senate election, and didn't seek reelection
to the House for 1961, ending this type in 1960.

WEIGHT TAX
Ch. 152 P 3/8/1933, E 8/1/1933. Began 1933.
Small supplemental plate issued by Public Service Commission to
buses, house cars, semi-trailers, tractors, trailers and trucks.
This law was challenged in 1933 but ultimately upheld in 1934;
however, a court injunction prevented the state from collecting
the tax so no plates were issued in 1934 or early 1935.
Ch. 304 P 3/13/1935, E 7/1/1935. Plates went on sale 6/17/1935.
Law expanded E 1/1/1938 to apply to almost all commercial vehicles.
Repealed by Ch. 181 P 3/10/1941, E 1/1/1942. Discontinued 1942.
LEGENDS: "WEIGHT TAX/TRAILER" (etc.) top, "INDIANA 1933" bottom 1933, 1936-37,
