Indiana began automobile registration in 1905.  From 1905 through mid-1913, auto owners had the option of providing their own plates or purchasing state-issued plates, with the vast majority choosing the latter.  After July 1, 1913, state-issued plates were mandatory.  Indiana's least popular plate was issued in 1984-86, encouraging visitors to "WANDER INDIANA".  The current issue of plates started in 2017.
