Missouri began automobile registration in 1903 and state-issued plates in 1911.  The only problem with the 1903-07 system was that motorists had to obtain a new license (for $2) in every county of the state they traveled in and display that plate.  It was cheaper to take the train, so not many were issued!  The current issue of plates started in 2008.
