Mississippi started automobile registration and state-issued plates in 1912, but this law was declared unconstitutional, halting plate issuance in early 1913.  Therefore, the 1913 plate is so scarce that none were discovered until 1985, and only four are known today.  A new law and plate issue resumed in 1914.  County names have been embossed on all plates since 1941.  The current issue of plates began in 2019.
