Louisiana automobile registration and state-issued plates began in 1915.  From 1922 through 1929, two different-colored series of plates were issued depending on the automobile's horsepower rating.  A pelican was featured for most years (even a full-color decal in 1950) from 1932 until numbers over one million squeezed the bird out in late 1962 and 1963.  Louisiana celebrated her World's Fair in 1984.  The earliest of five currently valid base plates began issue in 1993.
