Iowa began automobile registration in 1904 and state-issued plates in 1911.  Iowa, along with Arizona and Nebraska, debuted the use of county code prefixes on plates in 1922, a law enforcement tool ultimately used by more than half the states.  The current issue of plates started in 1997.
