Florida began automobile registration in 1905 and state-issued plates in 1918. From late 1911 through 1917, the state additionally required auto owners to purchase and display an annual county tag, resulting in a wide variety of interesting and rare plates, mostly of porcelain. The 1935 plate might have been successful if the colors hadn't been reversed from yellow to black - the two small grapefruits in the upper corners unfortunately resembled small bombs instead! The current issue of plates, which shows two oranges instead, started in 2004.
