MONTANA
Motorcycles began to be registered by the state in 1913 at the same time automobile registration started. It is not known if smaller-size plates were made available by the state for use on motorcycles or whether the large passenger models sufficed. Owner-provided plates were also allowed until 1917.
Secretary-of-State-issued 1915 motorcycle plates are known, with the highest number confirmed being #612. It is not certain if numbers began at #100 like passenger plate numbers did. Similar 1916 motorcycle plates were probably issued but none are known. Motorcycle Dealer plates with a "D" began in 1917 but none are verified until 1924.
