HIGHWAY PATROL
One of four special prefixes reported in use in 1950 on undated
state-owned plates. "THP" prefix.
All are undated. Earliest seen with 1951-55 dies.
(State Owned #S2-330 - S2-343 assigned to Highway Patrol 1934.)
Discontinued by c.1972; issued State Government Service plates.
A. (1951?) White/Red, "TENN." bottom, thin dies, #THP-99.
B. (1955?) White/Dark Green, vertical "TENN" right,
"DRIVE-SAFELY" bottom, thin dies, #THP-79 - THP-289.

center, large map, #THP128
D. (1960?) White/Light Blue, "
/TENN/" top, holes, #THP-103 - THP-639.
HIGHWAY PATROL MOTORCYCLE
All are undated. Earliest seen assumed to also be 1951-55 era.
(100 sets of State Free Motorcycle assigned to Highway Patrol 1931.)
A. (1955?) Map shape, "TENN." bottom left, #THP-4.
HOUSE/SENATE
Began 1955. House or Senate Joint Resolutions as follows:
H.J.R. 14 P 3/30/1949, reserving low numbers for 32 Senate and
99 House members, in addition to the ones already assigned to
State Officials, Colonels on the Governor's Staff and other
dignitaries. (Legislators were assigned #201 - 332 of the
Governor's Staff series.)
S.J.R. 31 P 3/3/1953, assigning low numbers as follows:
#2 = Speaker of the Senate, #3 = Speaker of the House, #4 to 134
= Senate or House. This is when the separate reverse-color
low-number series began, duplicating Governor's Staff
series. 1953 #9 seen.
S.J.R. 52 P 4/9/1953, allowing duplicate plates for legislator's
second car. "These two sets of plates may or may not be
designated by the suffix 'A' after their duplicate numbers."
H.J.R. 6 P 2/4/1955, E 3/1/1955, provided for specially marked
plates. Numbers and legends as follows: #2 = "Lt. Gov.",
#3 = "Speaker of the House", #4 to 134 = "State Senator" or
"State Representative".
H.J.R. 34 P 3/10/1955, making the above legends optional.
S.J.R. 6 P 1/30/1957, established numbers 2 to 133, legends
still optional, and additional cars to have "A", "B", "C" added.
S.J.R. 20 P 2/26/1959, assigned numbers as follows:
#2 = Lt. Governor, #3 = Speaker of the House, #4 to 5 = Senate
Majority Floor Leaders, #6 to 35 = Senate (alphabetically),
#36 to 37 = House Majority Floor Leaders, #38 to 133 = House
(alphabetically).
S.J.R. 48 P 3/9/1961, re-assigned numbers, same as 1959 except:
#6 to 7 = House Majority Floor Leaders, #8 to 37 = Senate.
There is very little uniformity among plates ordered by members
of the legislature, because they could select custom numbers,
initials, county names or codes, legends, reversed colors, etc.
Note 3 different terms for Legislator in 1960!
