Eric Tanner is one of the most influential figures in license plate history research. Among many projects throughout his long career, he introduced the now widely used concept of "highs" to the lexicon, and was the first to document the first known year of issue for nearly every non-passenger type of every state and province. He created the website All About License Plates in 2010 to freely share his knowledge and findings, making it the perfect fit for the Vehicle Registration History Center (VRHC) after its founding in 2023.
Tanner first began collecting old license plates in 1976 after discovering a run of Maine 1920-30 plates at a yard sale. He joined ALPCA in 1979 and authored his first feature article in 1986. Tanner wrote the regular column Winning Numbers from 1992 to 2002, co-authored License Plates County Codes of the United States and Canada in 1995, fulfilled two terms on the ALPCA Board of Directors in 1997-2001, and served as ALPCA Archivist from 2009 to 2014. He was inducted into the ALPCA Hall of Fame in 2016. Tanner has been the Editor of ALPCA's PLATES Magazine since 2017. He has found each of these accomplishments to be incredibly rewarding!
Mr. Tanner is currently authoring a book on Maine license plate history, expected to be completed in 2028. For updates, please visit www.mainelicenseplates.com.
